Work cars at TTC Davisville CarhouseWork cars at Davisville Carhouse @2024 Dunlevy Publishing

Most of Toronto’s subway system is underground. When I was a young lad, I did not like riding the subways through the tunnels. I always felt happy to see the great outdoors whenever the train exited the Eglinton Station portal southbound towards Davisville. Even more exciting was the fact that I could see the train yard at Davisville Carhouse while cruising by.

Unfortunately, I recently found out that there are plans to cover the entire yard and build residential condos and a park on top of the train yard. I think this is a bad idea and seems like a waste of money. It’s as if we don’t have enough land in this city to build residential condos, so we have resorted to building them on top of railway yards! It was bad enough when we started building them on top of existing office buildings. The city is vast and has a LOT of underused land… land wasted with suburban-style single-family residences. The vast majority of the city was designed this way. High density development is concentrated in a few small areas. This type of zoning needs to change if we are to become a truly “world class” city.
